Our Mission Statement
Deer Park Public Library strives to deliver exemplary educational and recreational resources and programs that enrich and strengthen literacy, love of reading, and lifelong learning opportunities to provide our community with a high quality of life consistent with our history, culture and unique character.

Long Range Plan
The Long Range Plan gives a snapshot of the library, its current condition, and its long range vision for better serving the community.

History of the Library
The first Deer Park Public Library opened its doors on September 20, 1961 at 2222 Kingsdale in a wood frame recreation building that had previously been a fire station. On January 7, 1965, the library was made an official department of the city of Deer Park. A Library Board of Trustees was selected on January 13, 1965 to choose a site for a new building and, ten months later, had obtained a centrally located five-acre library site at P Street and Center.

City Council approved plans for a new library on February 6, 1968 and groundbreaking ceremonies took place on March 29, 1968. The Deer Park Public Library opened its doors at 3009 Center on February 25, 1969 with a full time staff of nine.

In 1993, the Deer Park Public Library underwent an expansion project. The expansion added additional public space to the existing building, including a meeting room, public restrooms, and space to house additional materials.

Our Library Today
On February 6, 2012, construction began on the Deer Park Public Library renovation/expansion project. This project was approved by the voters as part of a General Obligation bond election in September of 2000. After months of construction and several planned closures, the library held its grand opening celebration on April 4, 2013.

The addition to the building added 6,300 square feet, bringing the total square footage to 18,800. The project provides a new meeting room, meeting room preparation pantry, children’s reading area, children’s librarian’s workroom, and a family restroom. The Reading Tree, provided by the Friends of the Deer Park Public Library, sits proudly in the children’s reading area, welcoming young patrons and families.

The existing public space has been renovated to create a tech lab, small conference room, teen reading area, and a quiet study room. The additions to the library help the facility and staff meet the growing needs of our users.
