Business Watch

Strategy
Business Watch programs detect and deter crimes while diminishing opportunities for crime.

What is Business Watch?
The Business Watch Program is designed to enhance community security through heightened awareness and open communication between law enforcement and business owners.

The Business Crime Watch Program was established as the extended eyes and ears of the Deer Park Police Department.  Business owners and employees are educated in crime prevention and learn to begin taking systematic steps to reduce opportunities for crimes in and around business locations.

Business Crime Watches are made up of a group of businesses in a particular area, or a group involved in a similar type of business.  The group meets periodically to discuss problems they may be having around the businesses, and work toward solutions to combat those problems. The meetings give business owners a chance to interact with each other, and with law enforcement, on a regular basis.

Similar to Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch encourages businesses to keep an eye on neighboring businesses as well as their own and report suspicious activity.

Key components

  • Reporting crime – effectively observing and reporting to police on crimes and suspicious activities that lead to crime;
  • Operation identification – marking all equipment, machines, etc., with traceable identification numbers for deterrence and tracing;
  • Robbery prevention – eliminating “easy prey” crime opportunities;
  • Burglary prevention – adding security measures to impede criminals, detect criminal activity, and communicate with the police

Key Partnerships

Key partnerships are those among the businesses and business people themselves and their organization and leaders.  They, in turn, form a key partnership with the Deer Park Police Department, especially the beat officers and crime prevention.  Crime Prevention Officer Taylor can be of assistance and can direct businesses to their specific beat officer for future contacts.

Implementation of the Business Watch Program
The Deer Park Police Department Business Watch Program is in its initial stage.  There are beat meetings with the officers and business owners taking place within the city and there is a data base of businesses being gathered to enhance communication within the community of businesses and with law enforcement.  Business Watch members can place a decal in their store front windows and post Business Watch  signs on their commercial property, warning criminals that they are in an active Business Watch Community, and that merchants are watching out for each other.  Further, officers will be routinely driving by area businesses. On a random basis, an officer will physically check the business for open doors or unsecured glass windows.
