Crossing Guard and Bicycle Safety

Summer Safety Fun
Vacation Safety School teaches safety skills to elementary school aged children. It is two (2), one week sessions during the summer from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Twenty children, ages 7 to 10 may attend the first session and twenty children ages 11 to 14 may attend the second session. (The dates are announced each year) The program is operated free of charge to participants.  To qualify, students must be residents of Deer Park or registered in the Deer Park Independent school district.

Safety lessons are taught primarily by Deer Park Police Department personnel.  Topics include Police Officers Care, Home Alone Safety, Stranger Danger, Drug Prevention, Fire Safety, Gun Safety, Bicycle Safety, and Neighborhood Safety.

During the week, the children are fingerprinted, get to tour the Deer Park Police Department, participate in a bicycle rodeo, and receive a visit from McGruff, the Crime Dog. There will also be a visit from Wally Wise Guy as the children are taught about Shelter In Place.

Many community agencies participate in Vacation Safety School training.  The Deer Park Police Department Telecommunications Division reviews the correct usage of the emergency 911 telephone system.  The Deer Park Fire Department gives a tour of a fire station, displays a fire engine, ambulance, and teaches fire safety.  The Deer Park Police Department Crossing Guards review the correct way to cross the street within a school zone.  Other classes include Anti-Bullying, Poison Awareness, and Water Safety.

Each child needs to complete an application and submit it to the Deer Park Police Department.

Email Officer Taylor or call 281-930-2148 for application information.
