3 Ways to Make the Most of the Sunshine in Deer Park

Whether it’s summertime or not, the sun always shines bright in Southeast Texas. If you want to feel a little bit of that sun for yourself, most cities are going to make you choose between being near the action and being somewhere affordable. Kill two birds with one stone by having your cake and eating it too in the best of both worlds that is Deer Park, TX!

Proudly known as the “Birthplace of Texas,” Deer Park is home to an ever-growing list of outdoor activities for families, while also being just 30 minutes from Houston’s most popular destinations and the Kemah Boardwalk! Read our list below for tips on how to maximize your outdoor time in Deer Park!

Dow Park

With “park” being in the name of the city, you know Deer Park must take them seriously. There’s no better example of this than Dow Park, which has recently been designated as a Lone Star Legacy Park. If you don’t know, that’s the park equivalent of getting an Oscar or Pulitzer—the highest honor a park can earn!

One visit to Dow Park and you’ll see why it’s earned its reputation. It’s clean, expansive, and home to all the free amenities a family could want. You’ll find a playground, rose garden, tennis courts, racquetball courts, a splash pad with a uniquely Texan twist, and much more. Beyond the amenities, Dow Park plays host to some of Deer Park’s most anticipated events, such as Concerts in the Park and the family-favorite, Dive-In Movies.

Not being a park to rest on its laurels, Dow Park is continuing to grow with an all-new addition, the Dow Park Active Complex. Set to open in the summer of 2025, it will be a state-of-the-art, two-story facility centered around fitness, recreation, and community-building. Look forward to an indoor fitness pool, four volleyball courts, outdoor bathhouse, and large spaces for community events, just to name some of its features. Once the Active Complex is ready, it’s going to be the place in Deer Park for breaking a sweat and breaking the ice.

Deer Park Nature Preserve

Parks are a great way to get outside, but if you’re looking to get outside-outside, the Deer Park Nature Preserve may be more your speed. This vertical slice of Southeast Texas will take you through wetlands and prairies via a series of gorgeous hiking trails.

Not only will you see a variety of head-turning flora—including carnivorous plants—but you’re likely to see some of the area’s most magnificent wildlife. Keep an eye out for armadillos, coyotes, and bobcats, as well as the bat houses installed around the property. Bats at the preserve are known to eat 6 million mosquitoes every night! Feel free to stop by one of the houses to say thank you!

For those interested, the preserve is also a popular spot for geocaching. If you’ve never heard of it, geocaching is a real-world treasure-hunting game in which players use GPS to find hidden caches. The geocaches are placed there by other players and typically include some fun goodies or a logbook for everyone who finds it to sign. It’s a fun way to add some adventure to an everyday stroll!

A Short Drive to Houston and the Kemah Boardwalk

One of the very best things about Deer Park is its prime location right between Houston and the Kemah Boardwalk—two of Southeast Texas’s favorite destinations. What’s more, staying the night in Deer Park is far more affordable than a place in Houston or near the coast, making Deer Park a perfect hub for exploring the greater Houston area.

Just a short drive away, for example, is the Houston Zoo, which is home to over 6,000 animals from all around the globe. In addition to the traditional zoo experience, they also offer up-close encounters with giant anteaters, elephants, and sea lions, as well as the ability to feed giraffes! If you want to put a smile on your family’s faces, the Houston Zoo is the place to do it.

For a taste of the coast and old-school excitement, head to the Kemah Boardwalk, less than 30 minutes from Deer Park. This coastal theme park overlooks Galveston Bay, offering unbeatable views from its Ferris wheel, the Boardwalk Tower, and Boardwalk Bullet roller coaster. Younger kids may be more into the double-decker carousel, the train that goes all around the boardwalk, or the many carnival games scattered around. And if we started listing out all the great restaurants around the boardwalk, we’d be here all day when we could be chowing down at Landry’s, Tookie’s, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, and T-Bone Tom’s!

Plan Your Deer Park Adventure

Few cities in the Houston area offer all the convenience, affordability, and entertainment the average family is looking for in a vacation, but Deer Park is one of them. Free outdoor experiences like Dow Park and the Deer Park Nature Preserve are a perfect way to unwind and escape. When you’re ready to splurge on some big city thrills or a day at the boardwalk, both are just a short drive away!

Give you and your family something to look forward to by planning your trip today! We have plenty of cozy hotels just waiting to make your stay amazing.
