San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site

An absolute must-see, the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site tells the dramatic story of the fight for independence from Mexico in larger-than-life fashion. Take one glance at the 567-foot-tall San Jacinto Monument and you’ll know you’re someplace truly special. The monument and the San Jacinto Museum sit on the grounds of the San Jacinto Battleground, a 1,200-acre park where General Sam Houston’s outnumbered army defeated the forces of Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna.

Step into San Jacinto Museum and you’ll find exhibits that span 500 years of history, including Sam Houston’s inscribed ring, Santa Anna’s glove, and even a knife used by Davy Crockett at the Alamo. Oh, and if you were marveling at how tall the San Jacinto Monument was and wondered what it would be like at the very top, you can find out! Take the elevator to its peak and soak in the panoramic view. As you look out upon the grounds, the roads, and the buildings in the distance, try to imagine how it might’ve looked 200 years ago.

When you’re back outside, don’t forget to visit the San Jacinto Battlefield, the site of the final battle of the Texas Revolution. Whether you peruse the battlefield at your own pace or take one of the guided tours, you’re sure to feel the gravity of the monumental event that took place there. For the full experience, we recommend visiting on San Jacinto Day, as part of the celebration involves a reenactment of the epic battle!

Heritage Park

Move over, history books and museums! Heritage Park is a beautiful space with green fields and elegant trees, perfect for both a relaxing day out and—as it happens—an education of Texas history! The centerpiece of the park is Patrick’s Cabin, a representation of the cabin where the initial treaty papers securing Texas’ independence were drafted. Walking into this authentic recreation lets you visualize just what that famous moment may have looked like!

But history isn’t the only thing you’ll find at Heritage Park. It’s also where the Art Park Players call home, making their own kind of history since 1979! With four full-scale productions a year, it’s no wonder the Art Park Players Theatre is one of the most beloved dinner theater experiences in southeast Texas.

Battleground Golf Course

In Deer Park, you can’t even throw a golf ball without hitting a piece of Texas history. Ok, that’s a little bit of an exaggeration, but only a little bit!

That’s because the 18-hole championship Battleground Golf Course—in addition to its rolling fairways, manicured greens, and strategic water hazards—is famous for its historic Pruitt Truss Bridge, which dates back all the way to the founding of the city! What’s more, each hole on the course is named after a figure in Texas history.

Golfers of all skill levels will thrive at the Battleground Golf Course, since in addition to the championship course, there’s a three-hole practice course. After a round of golf, The Republic Grill, an onsite restaurant, is a relaxing spot to unwind and enjoy a great meal with scenic views through expansive picture windows.

Whether you spend your time marveling at historic sites, exploring iconic landmarks, teeing off at the Battleground Golf Course, or doing all three, a weekend in Deer Park is an exciting family trip that doesn’t break the bank. And with all the history, adventure, and charm the city has to offer, you’ll be bringing home the greatest souvenirs of all: memories.
